Description of Project | While
serving as a library/education volunteer on Kosrae island in the
Federated States of Micronesia, my school, Utwe Elementary School,
was the grateful recipient of a gift of new books from the West
Cascades RPCV group. When I first opened the door to the library in
the rural
village of Utwe, Kosrae I was impressed at the amount of books the
library had in
stock. As I took a closer look though I noticed that a great
portion of the books were moldy from overexposure to the humid air,
or, in the case of reference materials, outdated. The most recent
encyclopedia set was about 30 years old and written in college level
text. WCPCA generously
donated a new set of World Book Encyclopedias and many new
children's books.
Through this donation, grants, and other charity, the library became
a well used resource for the entire community. By the end of my two
years, the library had many new books, a system for cataloging
materials, air conditioning, and even internet access. Many thanks
to WCPCA and their support of Peace Corps projects.
