D. Proposal Summary The Nylander Home for the Physically Handicapped is seeking U.S. Partners who will sponsor one or more wheelchairs to be produced by the Home and placed with needy, handicapped people in Sri Lanka. There are few high-quality, locally produced wheelchairs in Sri Lanka. There are few handicapped people who can afford wheelchairs. There are fewer self-help homes for the handicapped tapping the productive potential of their community. The Nylander Home is addressing all of these needs in its attempt to demonstrate that handicapped people can contribute fca society if given the right tools. The Home's message needs to be communicated to the Sri Lankan community at large, where many handicapped people are in need of both mobility and inspiration. The residents of the Home have developed the skills and acquired the equipment necessary to produce high-quality. Sri Lankan-appropriate wheelchairs. With initial sponsorship, the Home will be able to operate its light-engineering workshop efficiently and cost-effectively. The recipients of these light-weight, appropriately tailored wheelchairs will immediately realize new freedoms. They will be able to go places, and do things, that they never could before. Relatives and friends will be inspired to lend greater support. The potential number of people reached and positively influenced by this project is unlimited.
